Business Card or Visiting Card is one of the widely used tools that one uses for the purpose of business networking. It does not just share the details of a person but is an advocate for one’s business as well. A card has a dual role. Firstly, a well-thought-out card has the potential to ignite a conversation. Secondly, a business card is the one tangible thing a person will take away from a chance meeting and thereby leaving a lasting impression.

Even though this is a mighty networking tool, there are certain disadvantages with the traditional printed form of visiting cards. For instance, you may have to seek the services of a professional graphic designer and then get it printed from a high-quality printer.  Once printed, it cannot be changed. You can only carry a limited number of visiting cards at a time as it takes up space, and can become overwhelming. Thus at times, you may experience a shortage of the same. Also, as per reports, 88% of business cards handed out will be thrown out in less than a week. Moreover, it is not handy to make a call or to send an email with the help of a printed visiting card. More importantly, the printed form of visiting cards is not friendly to the environment.

Do we have an optimal fix for these issues? Well, yes! We do – digital or virtual visiting cards. To deal with all these shortcomings several companies have come up with virtual visiting cards that are easy to create and handle. These are easy to access and are environment friendly.

Google, the technology giant, very recently has rolled out its virtual visiting cards in India. The company calls it “people cards” and it supports only the English language currently. Users can create people cards about themselves by signing into their Google account and then looking up their name on Google search. This will prompt a new option called “add me to Search” or “get started”; tapping this will open a form that asks users to provide a bio of themselves, their picture, links to their website and social media profiles and, optionally, their phone number, address, work, education details, and email address.

With this information, users can be easily discovered online.  Google said the more information a user provides, the easier it would be for others to find them on Google Search. It has taken different measures to curb the potential misuse of the new feature. People card appears to be Google’s latest step to bring more functionality into search and thereby reduce a user’s reliance on many other services such as LinkedIn, Indeed, etc.

So, whether you are an influencer, entrepreneur, freelancer, or anyone else, all you need is a Google account and a People Card to get yourself discovered and build professional networking.
